SIMONE SIGNORET

The first French actor to ever win an Oscar, Simone Signoret left us on this day in 1985 from pancreatic cancer. She was 64. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simone_Signoret

FRAN DRESCHER

Happy 52nd to Fran! We always got a kick out of her in The Nanny (especially when we turned the sound off.....just kidding, hey, Mess is a native New Yawker too) but we hadn't realized that her off screen work with her fellow cancer survivors led her to a diplomatic post. She had also considered a Congressional run in 2010. Who knew?

FAMOUS ALAMO HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL GRAD - GUESS WHO

We ran this one before with a rather obscure photo and no one got it, so we'll make it too easy this time.

ANITA EKBERG

Born today in Sweden in 1931. Her fountain scene in Fellini's La Dolce Vita is one of the most amazing moments in film. Ekberg lives in Italy.

MADELINE KAHN

Born on this day in 1942, and left us in 1999 at the age of 57 after a struggle with ovarian cancer.

W.H. AUDEN

The poet left us on this day in 1973. He was 66. Once, when Mess was a mere babe in the woods, a lover quoted "Lay Your Sleeping Head, My Love" to me. Decades later, that gesture (and that poem) stays with me.

PAUL JABARA

Passed away on this day in 1992 from AIDS related complications. He was 44. While Barry Manilow may have written the songs that made the whole world sing, Jabara wrote the songs that made the whole world dance. He wrote Donna Summer's Oscar and Grammy Award-winning hit "Last Dance" from Thank God It's Friday (1978) and Barbra Streisand's Golden Globe-nominated song "The Main Event/Fight" from The Main Event (1979). He cowrote the Weather Girls hit, "It's Raining Men" with Paul Shaffer.

SUNDAY'S MESSAGE

MEAT LOAF

Born Marvin Lee Aday on this day in 1947, Meat Loaf was another huge part of Little Mess's formative years.

ALISON "THE NIGHTBIRD" STEELE

When Mess was a kid in New York, the coolest thing you could do was stay up all night and listen to The Nightbird on WNEW FM. The DJ who pioneered "progressive" rock radio was the smoky, sultry voiced Alison Steele. One of the most popular radio DJ's of all time, Steele passed away on this day in 1995 from stomach cancer at the age of 58.

LA REVE EST FINI

We were waiting for a really special occassion (and a winning lottery ticket) to try La Reve downtown in The Exchange Building, and now we hear it's closing! It's not because there aren't enough folks with a few hundred or more to splurge on dinner( It's booked way in advance always), it's because Owner and Chef Andrew Weissman has expanded his culinary empire north of 1604 and at The Pearl Brewery, so he's spread thin. It does seem odd, though, to close the flagship. La Reve was voted one of the six greatest American restaurants and one time Best in Texas by critics. It's about as strange as, let's say, GM getting rid of Cadillac. But these are strange days indeed.

RANDY QUAID ARRESTED IN MARFA

Randy Quaid and his wife Evi spent a little time in the Marfa, Texas jail after they were picked up by the local po po. A felony warrant for burglary, defrauding an innkeeper and conspiracy was issued out of Santa Barbara, Calif., for the couple after authorities received a complaint in early September that they had not paid a bill of more than $10,000 due to a local hotel, according to a release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department. Skipped out on the hotel? Interesting, since they withrew $40K bail money for both of them from a local bank. Guess they didn't like the room service in Santa Barbara. Quaid, you may recall, bitched and moaned about how little he was paid for his blink and miss it part in Brokeback Mountain. He didn't think the film was going to be so big, so he worked cheap. Looks like he has money issues, huh.

AIDA TURTURRO

Born today in 1962. When my sister Stella and I watched The Sopranos on DVD, she made me rewind the part where Richie slapped Janice at dinner and Janice just gets up from the table like she's going to get the damn grated romano and she picks up a gun and blows Richie away. Stella can be just wrong, sometimes. But we know we'd best be loyal to the family!

PEDRO ALMODOVAR

Born today in 1949.

DON ADAMS

Died on this day in 2005 at the age of 82.

YOU'VE BEEN A BAD EMU!!

FOREST, Miss. – Officers had to use a stun gun and handcuffs to capture an emu running loose on Interstate 20 in central Mississippi on Sunday. Police Officer Kiley Culpepper told WLBT-TV in Jackson that motorists had been calling 911 since Friday to report sightings of two emus on I-20 and nearby U.S. Highway 80.
Authorities had been unable to find the animals until Sunday, when one was spotted near an I-20 entrance ramp.
The big bird was dodging traffic. Culpepper and deputies were able to surround the animal but has to use the Taser and handcuffs to finally get it off the road.
After being captured, the animal was taken to the Scott County Forest Coliseum.

RUSS MEYER

Passed away today in 2004. Born in 1922, the director was known for his cultish B-movies and big boobed starlets. His "Faster, Pussycat, Kill Kill!" remains a miracle of exploitation, camp, and sheer wierdness. Think straight John Waters meets Quentin Tarantino.

GRETA GARBO

The most enigmatic film star that ever lived, Garbo was born on this day in Stockholm in 1905. Bisexual, reclusive, and incredibly wealthy mostly due to wise real estate investments, Garbo began almost four decades of seclusion when she bought a seven room riverfront apartment in New York in 1953. "I want to be left alone," she said, and pretty much was for the rest of life, which ended in 1990 at the age of 84.

An anti-gay Massachusetts politician is angling to replace the late Sen. Edward Kennedy in the United States Senate. Gossip site Gawker reports that he posed nude for a magazine more than a quarter of a century ago.Massachusetts State Sen. BRAVE NEW FRONTIERS

NEW YORK – "The Newlywed Game" is bringing on its first gay couple.
It's a celebrity duo for the long-running game show, now on the GSN cable network. George Takei, who played Mr. Sulu on "Star Trek," will appear with his partner, Brad Altman. They just celebrated their first anniversary after being married in Los Angeles.
Takei and Altman have been together for 22 years, so they're nothing like the giggly young couples who appeared on the first version of the show.

MARIA CALLAS

Died on this day in Paris in 1977 at the age of 53. The cause of death was a heart attack, possibly induced by an overdose of sleeping pills. A murder conspiracy was also explored, as Callas left a 9 million dollar estate.

ANNE FRANCIS

Born today in 1932. When Mess was just a lil' mess Anne Francis starrred on TV (back when we had rabbit ear antennae and there was no cable) as Honey West, a wild and sexy female detective who drove a Cobra and had a pet ocelet. Mess thought she was beyond cool.

TO PATRICK SWAYZE, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING

The native of Houston, Texas lost his battle with pancreatic cancer today. He was 57. Last month we ran his birthday pic, looking so manly and sexy and handsome (and that he was) but we most remember his amazing work in "To Wong Fu". You can dance dirty, you can be a ghost, you can be a bouncer in a road house, but when you steal a movie from your "fellow" drag queens, you've got balls. We're gonna miss you...

SOME GAY SAN ANTONIO SHIT

Usually we leave all this sort of stuff to our dear friends at Q San Antonio, who we offer our readers a FREE link to, while they NEVER acknowledge Mess. Mess even offered to sleep with the publisher for a link, but NADA, NOTHING, ZIP. Anyhoo, On the top (hmmmmmmmmmm) is San Antonio Pillagers of Donuts Head Honcho William Mc Anus, who is having 9 of his officers named in a FEDERAL CASE regarding that nasty little raid on a local lesbeen couple's home. Add that to all the almost daily hi-jinks of his largely farcical force. Now before y'all come down hard on me, I know there a few good cops. TOO FEW!
On the bottom ( we always figured he was.....) is our loveable little HEB Buddy. As HEB was named by HRC as one of the most GLBT friendly employers in San Antonio, the Krazy Kristians are already threatening to shop someplace else. If you live outside of San Antonio, you will miss the beautiful irony - HEB is our only supermarket! Well, there's Sun Harvest (aka Henry's in some other states) but we have a feeling they may be a bit too healthy and organic for most of the haters. So let the haters fill up on cheap wine and wafers. But of course, that would mean they would actually have to GO TO CHURCH.

Y'ALL NEED TO BEHAVE!

Good Lord, people. What is up with all this national bad behavior? Have y'all just gone mad? All you money stealing investment counselors, all you bank officials throwing par-tays in foreclosed houses, all you singers beating up on women (if you can remember doing it.....), all you tax payer's money usin' cheating ass congress men, you nasty ass screaming tennis players, you retarded mike grabbing stage hogging thunder stealing rap singer, all of you child abusing parents, oh, sweet father of Jesus, I need to stop and take some NERVINE. ALL YOU ALL ARE GOING TO HELL OR WORSE. Mess is making a damn list. You are all (if you are not already in damn jail) spending next summer right here in San Antonio. With no god damn air conditioning. Think about it.
